Astrolabe Wines was established by a group of friends in 1996, effectively to become Simon Waghorn’s own wine label. Simon gained a Post Graduate Diploma of Wine at Roseworthy College in Australia and in his early years worked as a winemaker for Cooks and Corbans in Te Kauwhata and Gisborne. He then took up a position with Whitehaven Wines in Blenheim in 1995 and established Astrolabe Wines in 1996. Every bottle of Astrolabe reflects the expertise Simon has gained over an acclaimed career of almost 20 years. His skill – and love – of winemaking has been recognised by numerous gold medals in New Zealand wine awards. Simon’s knowledge is complemented by respected Vineyard Manager Jeff Hammond, with dedicated viticultural support from Jeremy Hyland.
This wine is very rich in apricot and citrus aromas. Sumptuous sweet fruit, with apricot and citrus peel flavours, and a honeyed texture. This wine will continue to develop rewarding flavour and bottle complexity with ageing, but is showing the most pronounced varietal characters in the first blush of youth!
