Barossa is widely regarded by international wine writers, judges, retailers and consumers as Australia’s most famous wine region. Why?
It has the longest unbroken lineage of winemaking and grape growing families in the country, some entering their seventh generation. It has been the headquarters of innovation and production since the early 1900s.
It is home to Australia’s most unique varietal style – Barossa Shiraz – and its most premium and sought-after embodiments: among them Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace.
While Shiraz is our hero red variety, Riesling is our hero white variety, where its place is firmly entrenched in Eden Valley.
Barossa is home to over 40 wine grape varieties, each with its own character, reflecting the hand of the grower and the winemaker.

Blend is made up of a huge list of varieties including Verdelho, Grenache, Shiraz, Touriga, White Muscat and Palomino. Some of these components date back over 30 years, and are responsible for adding the lusciousness and the distinctive rancio (butterscotch) characters we find in this wine. This year I topped up the old base blend with a little old Verdelho, and Touriga. Plenty of rich, rancio, butterscotch flavours and fine drying oak tannins, warm alcohol and fantastic length of flavour. Drink now or cellar.

Delightful layers of mocha and spice from the extra tight grain oak fills the glass. In two words the wine is ‘mouth’ – ‘filling’. The brilliant 2018 vintage has delivered a timeless and generous Old Bastard. The palate opens with an abundance of bright dark berries and tight chalky tannins with layers of mocha, coffee and chocolate. As always, the wine is completely in balance. The finish is long and firm. The gift that keeps on giving.
