Cullen-Diana Madeline-Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot-2004-750mL

The 2004 Diana Madeline was produced using biodynamic techniques, which Cullens believe is crucial for optimising the quality of the fruit flavours and for investing the wine with a velvety structure and very high quality tannins.

It was made from a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The fruit was picked at Baumés ranging from 12.1-13.7, producing an average value of 13.5º. The wine was matured for 18 months in French oak, of which 54% was new.

The nose shows intense blackcurrant and cranberry fruit, and the subtle cedary cinnamon spice, barrel-ferment and oak derived aromas, violet and mint scents, as well as liquorice and chocolate smells. Interwined is this wounderful green edge that lifts the wine into a cool climate sepctrum which typifies the cold year.

These Aromas combine with some cassis, blueberry, and cranberry, with lingering mocha and plumy fruit and are just showing through amongst a long, intense vibrant, gritty fruit tannin finish.

d'Arenberg-The Dead Arm-Shiraz-2000-750mL

A perfume of grilled steak intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, earth, pepper, and melted licorice rises from this awesome red. With great power, richness, and no hard edges, it is still young and primary, but should hit its peak in 3-7 years, and last for two decades or more.

d'Arenberg-The Dead Arm-Shiraz-2003-750mL

The 2003 season was characterised by a very low winter rainfall which signalled the vine to minimize potential crop load. The ripening period was warm producing a crop load of small berries and very pure, ripe fruit characters. Even with a smaller than normal crop load many batches showed wonderful fruit characters due to an excellent skin to pulp ratios and this is evident in the final wine. This year in particular selected parcels of fruit deemed worthy of the Dead Arm label were down 50% in volume.

d'Arenberg-The Dead Arm-Shiraz-2004-1.5L

Upon release, ‘The Dead Arm’ Shiraz has a vivid, young, dense, purple-red colour. Very intense aromas with a complex combination of fragrant spices and violets, dark cherry, blackberry and blueberry, are made more complex with great liquorice, pepper and integrated svelte of boot-polish like characters. The taste is rich, gutsy and virile, with attacking spice, dark liquorice, cherry, blackberry, plum and dried black olive. The level of fruit weight masks the framework of oak tannins; however, the mineral fruit grittiness is balanced with a very long fruit-fragrant, persistent spice will yield a wine of great ageing power.

Intriguing bouquet of dark fruits and forest floor, brown spices, dried herbs, and hints of old rose. Released 2017. Made naturally with only a tiny amount of sulphite added at bottling. Unfined and unfiltered. This elegant and refined Pinot Noir rests on its bright natural acidity to enhance the red fruit and floral notes. Giaconda-Estate-Cabernet Sauvignon-2001-1.5L

Plum red hues; red berries, earth, vanilla bean, cedar and violets - intoxicating. The palate is sensual: sweet plum fruit, hints of vanilla, pungent wafts of violets, the slightest suggestion of toasty oak at the end, and Rick Kinzbrunner's fine lingering tannin signature. It is hard to imagine this as an Australian Cabernet. It is more akin to a cross between a Margaux and a Pomerol. It has the femininity of Margaux and the gloriously ripe plum fruit of Pomerol. This wine addresses the issues of fruit, tannin, oak and acid balance with considerable aplomb. Intense and sophisticated. Clearly the most distinguished and cerebral Cabernet to date from Giaconda.

Giaconda-Estate-Chardonnay-2001-1.5L

The 2001 has all the hallmarks of another fine Giaconda Chardonnay. Year in year out the consistency of this wine continues to amaze me. Once again the craftsmanship of Rick Kinzbrunner is clearly evident. It looks and smells like a wine of depth and complexity: straw gold with flashes of green; on the bouquet grilled nuts, the customary 'dirt', stone fruit, wheat and spicy notes from the oak herald a wine of breeding.

Giaconda-Warner-Shiraz-2001-1.5L

Deeply coloured magenta hues: roasted meats, black olives, vanilla bean, twists of black pepper and spice and cedary oak notes. The palate is rich, rolling and full: A mirror image of the bouquet. Fine powdery tannins work their way through the wine's mid palate carrying the sweet, black, spicy fruit. The finish is dry, the tannins doing their best work at the end of the wine as a counter - balance to the rich fruit. A glorious wine, packed with flavour, and built around a structure that allows the wine to dance on the palate, rather than trudge along stomping its feet. Deft and savoury.

Groom-Estate-Shiraz-2003-750mL

It is big, black and an intensely colored wine. The nose shows very generous black fruit characteristics of cherries, plums and cassis. A touch of anise and spice emerge, identifying shiraz as the true personality. The up front color and aroma intensity deceive one to think of big aggressive tannins and an unruly end, but you will be surprised to find the palate rich, round and voluptuous with a soft lingering finish.

Kaesler-Old Vine-Shiraz-2004-6L

The concentrated styles of Shiraz the Barossa produces are world famous. The 2004 Old Vine Shiraz was blended from 4 vineyards, all 45 years old.

The 2004 growing season had its challenges, most notably 3 days in a row, in excess of 46 degrees, two weeks prior to harvest. That aside, the wines are some of the best we have made, with complex aromatics and big full-bodied palates.

Plums and Blackberry stand tall through a wide spectrum of black fruits and malty oak. The palate has firm tannin that is nicely balanced with fruit and acid. Whilst firm in its youth it will open up and mature nicely over the next 10 years. Enjoy!

Koltz-Estate-Shiraz-2002-750mL

The Koltz Shiraz is the first of the estate grown wines and comes from a small block of shiraz at Blewitt Springs. It is produced in small volumes and is open fermented and basket pressed. Portions of this wine undergo extended maceration for up to 50 days, depending on the season and grape maturity.

Once pressed it is aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 20 months. Approximately 30% of the barrels are new and the others one and two years old.

Blewitt Springs is generally 2 to 4 weeks later than most of McLaren Vale and this combined with the sandy soils over ironstone produce distinctive wines.

Tatsing notes: Typically, these Koltz Shiraz show aromas of blueberries and earth and are elegant with velvety tannins and good length. Extended maceration contributes to the complexity of Koltz Shiraz and the aim with this wine is to produce a wine which reflects both the vineyard site and the philosophy.

The 2005 vintage is now showing deep red with a purple rim. The wine in its infancy still shows a lifted and perfumed nose with traces of red plum, blackcurrant and cracked red peppercorn.

The palate with all its freshness and luxurious, velvety tannins is so rich and concentrated, yet so reserved. It is a satisfying mixture of chocolate, aniseed and smoky oak. The copious layers are incredibly tightly bound and need time and careful cellaring to unleash the full potential of this wine.

Torbreck-RunRig-Shiraz-2002-750mL

The RunRig has often drawn comparison with the beautifully fragrant & tautly structured wines produced from the steep slopes of the Northern Rhône Valley’s Appellation of Côte Rôtie.

The RunRig is a structured, muscular wine with phenomenal density, dry vintage port-like concentration, and magnificent notes of smoke, blackberries, cassis, leather and coffee. A hint of viognier’s sweet marmalade character comes through as the wine sits in the glass.

The Highland clans used a “RunRig” system to distribute land amongst their clansmen in a series of widely dispersed holdings.

The emphasis not on any one farm, but rather the communal element of the whole. Shiraz from old dry grown vineyards is blended with viognier, complementing the strengths and complexities of these individual parcels of fruit, whilst giving the resulting wine a further dimension.
