91/100
The Wine Advocate
The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Amery Vineyards may be the finest Cabernet Kay Brothers has yet produced. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged several years in wood, it possesses a Pauillac-like nose of black currants, cedar wood, tobacco leaf, and spice box. With elegant, sweet fruit, medium to full body, and supple tannin, this beauty will drink well now and over time.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #155

89/100
Wine Spectator
Rich and generous, with a whoosh of black cherry and green olive flavor that rides over juicy acidity, firm tannins backing up the long finish.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: 2005

Koltz-Estate-Shiraz-2002-750mL

The Koltz Shiraz is the first of the estate grown wines and comes from a small block of shiraz at Blewitt Springs. It is produced in small volumes and is open fermented and basket pressed. Portions of this wine undergo extended maceration for up to 50 days, depending on the season and grape maturity.

Once pressed it is aged in French oak barrels for 16 to 20 months. Approximately 30% of the barrels are new and the others one and two years old.

Blewitt Springs is generally 2 to 4 weeks later than most of McLaren Vale and this combined with the sandy soils over ironstone produce distinctive wines.

Tatsing notes: Typically, these Koltz Shiraz show aromas of blueberries and earth and are elegant with velvety tannins and good length. Extended maceration contributes to the complexity of Koltz Shiraz and the aim with this wine is to produce a wine which reflects both the vineyard site and the philosophy.

A rich, round, soft, voluptuous, fruit driven Shiraz with a hint of confectionery sweetness in the background. A very approachable full bodied combination of blueberries, plum, Ribena, mocha chocolate, spice box, vanilla and pepper fill the palate with pleasurable flavours and the balanced soft tannin finish has both length and persistence.

Perfumed notes of blackberry, violets, tar, licorice and roasted meats. The palate shows great depth and weight with a solid core of blackberry, ripe plum and hints of black pepper flavours. The bright tannin remains focused and in balance against the fruit profile.

Kay Brothers Amery-Block Six-Shiraz-2003-750mL

Multi layered concentration of very rich, juicy, full-bodied black-berried fruits combined with chocolate, tar, pepper, liquorice, smoky oak and chewy robust tannins.

An intensely complex mouthful of Shiraz fruit with a finish that lingers and lingers. The rich fruit carries the 15.5% alc/vol and we would see this Block 6 developing into a great example of old vine Shiraz with 6 years plus in a good cellar.
