The melding of the three traditional Barossa varieties creates a tremendously complex and rewarding wine.

The Grenache and Mataro are from old bush vines that are pruned in the traditional ‘goblet’ style to a limited number of buds, reducing yields and promoting flavour and colour concentration. Only the free run component of the Shiraz is used in the blend to allow the Grenache identity to shine through.

Professional Reviews

93/100
The Wine Advocate
David Powell consistently excels with The Steading, an 8,000 case blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Shiraz. Aged 22 months in 300 liter hogsheads (foudres), it represents Australia's version of Chateauneuf du Pape. The 2002 The Steading's big, spicy, earthy nose reveals notions of cherry liqueur, licorice, pepper, dried Provencal herbs, raspberries, and leather. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, chewy, and heady, it is best drunk during its first 7-8 years of life, although it will last a lot longer.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #155

93/100
Wine Companion
Complex texture, structure and flavour; a melange of sweet tobacco, spice and fruits; sophisticated medium-bodied wine; fine, savoury tannins.
, James Halliday Issue: Jul 2004

89/100
Wine Spectator
Firm, with an earthy, gamy edge to the well-focused cherry and berry flavors, all lingering on the fine-grained, somewhat leathery finish. Grenache, Mataro (Mourvèdre) and Shiraz.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Jun 15 2005

17/20
Jancis Robinson
Much more savoury than the Juveniles. Salty Syrah (not Shiraz) flavours seem to dominate. Soft and gentle on the palate and then a pretty tough finish for now.
JR, Jancis Robinson Issue: Oct 2005
