Professional Reviews

94/100
Wine Companion
Oozing licorice, spice, blackberry and chocolate; very ripe and rich; tannins not overdone.
, James Halliday Issue: Oct 2003

93/100
The Wine Advocate
The 2002 The Laughing Magpie Shiraz/Viognier is the La Mouline of McLaren Vale. An exotic, heady, flamboyantly-styled red, it boasts an inky/purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of lychee nuts, acacia flowers, blackberries, and creme de cassis. Supple-textured and opulent, with pepper, licorice, and blackberry liqueur-like flavors, this beautiful wine is made in a modern, progressive style with terrific fruit intensity along with notions of sweet French oak in the background.
WA, Robert Parker Jr. Issue: #148

91/100
Wine Spectator
A lithe, lively red with a lovely subtle streak of apricot and spice running through the blackberry, blueberry and peppery spice flavors, beautifully balanced right through the harmonious finish.
WS, Harvey Steiman Issue: Dec 15 2003

Daniel's Top Picks
I can still remember first tasting this wine on release and being seduced by the lovely full bodied plumminess of the shiraz, the hint of spice and the lift that the viognier provides to the wine. 2002 was a great vintage for the region providing the wine with balance and a good structure that has given the wine an ability to age well. The wine has softened but still has an appealing fruit sweetness in the middle palate. Drinking beautifully now.
