Multi layered concentration of very rich, juicy, full-bodied black-berried fruits combined with chocolate, tar, pepper, liquorice, smoky oak and chewy robust tannins.

An intensely complex mouthful of Shiraz fruit with a finish that lingers and lingers. The rich fruit carries the 15.5% alc/vol and we would see this Block 6 developing into a great example of old vine Shiraz with 6 years plus in a good cellar.

Professional Reviews

95/100
The Wine Advocate
One of Australia's most traditional winemakers, Colin Kay fashions old style, high quality, distinctive Australian reds. The flagship wine, the 2003 Shiraz Block 6 (from 113-year-old vines) is a full-throttle, traditionally made Australian Shiraz boasting a dense plum/garnet/purple color in addition to a bouquet of creosote, sweet black cherries, cassis, forest floor, underbrush, and pepper. With great depth, full-bodied, powerful, concentrated flavors, high tannin, and a blockbuster finish, this distinctive Shiraz should drink well.

93/100
Wine Companion
Clean, soft, rounded wine; spice, plums, blackberry and mocha; fine tannins, good balance and length; has consumed the oak. Ultimate retro label; from 1.6 ha of 111-year-old vines.
, James Halliday Issue: Jan 2006

91/100
Wine Spectator
Polished, generous and appealing for its cascade of blackberry, plum and sweet spices that linger on the finish. Hints of chocolate and espresso as the finish sails on and on. Has miles to go.

Just wow - IHMO 98 / 100 !!
My father always said “how is it that Australians can die! With the weather here compare to that at home in Ireland and of course the quality of the wine”. Today, I’m reminded of this quirky tale and reminiscing about my father I’m further reminded that upon his 80th birthday treating him to drinking this wine from Kay Brothers; the Block 6 Shiraz 2003. It’s an amazing treat (always) to open these Block 6’s, the quality to “bang for your buck” proposition is really out of this world.
This 2003 is under screw-cap, and on tasting obviously it can’t be corked (phew).  On first glance I’m pleased to see the subtle tannins, the sweet vanilla and balanced Americian Oak, spice, good acid, and at 15.5% it packs a punch 🤜 however, as with most Kay Brothers wines it’s balanced and designed to age to perfection. This bottle was stored at 12 degrees since release so provenance is not a question, however, I am always pleasantly surprised when a bottle is this good. Under screwcap its definitely fresher than most 2003’s, and Kay Brothers were very much on the front foot in that regard 🙏👍🍷🇦🇺. Enjoy 😊
RPJ gave it 95/100, on tasting now some 15 years later I think it’s closer to 97-98/100. Your thoughts?
